The festival is the brainchild of Yachats resident Helen Anderson, who estimates attendance to be split pretty evenly between LGBTQ and straight people. Last year around 30 dogs participated, and this year owners can fill out vanity cards to introduce their contestants. Prizes will be awarded and every pooch and owner gets a Yachats Pride poop bag dispenser.

Trish Perry has a dream—she wants to see a Pride parade in her hometown of Bend. At a glance, that hardly seems like an impossible goal. In the late s, the American Psychiatric Association still classified homosexuality as a mental disorder, and gay men and lesbian women received almost universal moral condemnation from mainstream religions. The act of homosexual sex, even in private homes, was punishable by a light fine, 20 years in prison, or even a life sentence. Homosexuality was illegal in every state but Illinois.

On Friday, we kickoff Pride with a Dance and Cabaret at pm. DJ Vera Ruben will mix spin dance music from the 80s, 90s, and more and take your requests.
