Not the poppy, disco-inflected sheen of Dynastyand not even the self-implosion of Unmasked could have prepared fans for the overblown, vacuous narcissism of Music From the Elderwhich came out on Nov. Feeling the urge to make a bold, larger-than-life statement following the commercial collapse of Unmasked, Kiss decided to come back swinging with hard-hitting songs that resembled their pre-"Love Gun" material. In addition, the band felt that only an ambitious, concept album would gain them back the credibility they lost when they softened their sound and the respect they never received from mainstream critics.
And these furious fans were quick to shout it out loud. The "Dressed to Kill" group said on its website that a dispute between the original and new lineup destroyed the would-be concert at the Barclays Center. Founding members Simmons and Paul Stanley balked at performing with their original KISS cohorts Ace Frehley and Peter Criss, yet didn't want to perform solely with the musicians who replaced the original painted rockers in

Kiss were cruising at high speed during their late-'70s heyday. But as evidenced by the outside changes made to the songs on their first-ever greatest hits album, Double Platinumeven they couldn't always control exactly where the ship was headed. The band's label, Casablanca, decided to do things a little differently than it would to a standard greatest-hits package.
They're still broken up, but now have a new album nonetheless. Go figure. Amazingly, Rock Bottom pretty much picks up where 's brilliant Goodbye Private Life left off, with nods to New Order and the Cure interspersed with the garage drone of Jones' Farfisa and several patches of all-out racket.
In the year run of KISS Stanley has thrived and survived through lineup changes, internal band squabbles, the death of a band-mate, and the seismic shifts in trending sounds that would come during the 80s and 90s. KISS went from near extinction early on in the 80s to finishing the decade in good shape thanks in big part to Paul Stanley. With Gene Simmons more interested in pursuing a movie career it was up to Stanley to carry the weight in the studio for the non-makeup era version of the band.
