A line of 20 people has formed outside Metropolis in Irvine, despite rain that drums the pavement. Inside the club, the tyrannical disco beats force every conversation to be animated by gestures, and words are mouthed in exaggeration, like big yawns. The club is filling up fast on this Sunday, perhaps because of the repressive rain, which has ended the last three weekends on a similar soggy note.

The gay-nightlife scene is less pronounced these days than it used to be, but there's still a very fun gay bar right in Laguna, and a number of gay-friendly mixed hangouts and restaurants in the region. Like many of the early gay bars, it was straight during the daylight hours and gay after dark. Thinly veiled as a crowd control measure, this ban remained until The Happy Hour, a lesbian bar, opens in Garden Grove.
The lesbian-focused club Unzipped within Club Ripples is the perfect place to let loose with its go-go dancers upstairs and raucous atmosphere. Karaoke can be had downstairs during most nights and the go-go dancers will interact with you for some cash, as well. This place was given a total makeover by Tabatha Coffey and was featured on her television show, so any rumors of its prior demise have been greatly exaggerated and the upgrades have paid off in terms of style and substance.
